The smell of the 2010s
How a crystal-maker's anniversary present became the amber everyone wears.
You have smelled it, even if you have never worn it. In a lift, on a stranger's coat, in a queue for coffee: a glow of something sweet and airy and faintly burnt, like sugar caught a second too long in the pan. Francis Kurkdjian composed Baccarat Rouge 540 in 2015, and for the decade that followed it was the smell of being somewhere expensive.
Born from a Baccarat crystal 250th-anniversary commission, it escaped its limited edition to become the defining amber of the 2010s.

Short on notes, long on effect
Look at the composition and it is almost stark: saffron and jasmine at the top, amberwood and ambergris in the heart, fir resin and cedar underneath. That is 6 notes in all, where the average fragrance in our index lists 8.7. The trick is not in how much is there but in how it behaves — that amberwood note is what gives it the strange, radiant quality people describe as smelling "expensive" without being able to say why.
29,000 people have rated it. The average is 3.76 out of 5 — which is the sound of a fragrance that divides a room.
The argument about it
Baccarat Rouge 540 might be the most loved and most resented fragrance of its era at the same time. The reviews tell both stories:
“Opinions on performance split: some get all-day longevity and huge sillage, others find it turns into a soft skin scent quickly.”
“A hugely popular unisex compliment magnet, but many call it overhyped, polarizing, or too synthetic and metallic for the price.”
None of which has slowed it down. If anything, the argument is part of the appeal. A fragrance everyone agrees on is a fragrance nobody notices.
The price of the glow
At retail it works out at $514 per 100ml. The best value we can find, measured the same way, is The Dupe Spot Baccarat Rouge 540 #3 at $13 per 100ml.
