Explained
The number every dupe list leaves out
Why the cheapest bottle is often not the cheapest way to smell like something.
Most dupe lists tell you a price. Almost none tell you a size. And a 30ml bottle at $20 is not cheaper than a 100ml bottle at $40 — it is twice the price, for the thing you actually wear. Of 5,069 twins we can size, the typical one costs $69 per 100ml. The typical original costs $375.
The cheapest bottle is often not the cheapest way
For 192 originals in our index, the cheapest twin on the shelf is not the cheapest per 100ml. Take Chanel Coco Mademoiselle: the lowest price is ALT Fragrances Mistress at $29 for 60ml — but Copycat Fragrances Mademoiselle works out at $29 per 100ml, against $48.
Compare the thing you wear, not the thing you pay at the till.
How we do it
Every price on FragDNA is converted to dollars from the shop's own currency, divided by the bottle's size, and multiplied by 100. Rollerballs, samples and anything under 25ml are left out of the comparison — a 10ml decant is a different purchase. When a shop does not state a size, we read it from the product name; when we cannot find one, we do not compare it at all.
That is why the twins on every page are ranked the way they are. Sort the whole database by price per 100ml →
