Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune
Picture cold citrus struck like a match. That is the first ten seconds of Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune.

How it moves
Up top: grapefruit, bergamot, lemon and blackcurrant. Enjoy them; they will not stay. Then the heart turns up — neroli, jasmine and rose — and the whole thing slows down. The base is patchouli, vanilla and musk. That is the bit on your scarf the next morning.
Who made it
Mathilde Laurent composed it in 1999, for Guerlain in France. Mathilde Laurent's grapefruit soliflore is infamous for a sulphurous cassis-grapefruit accord that many wearers read as sweat; it remains the line's most divisive entry.
