The smell of Diwali: saffron, oud, rose and sweets for less
The festival of lights has a scent. The famous bottles that carry it, split four ways, each beside the cheaper twin made to smell like it.
Diwali falls on 8 November in 2026, the night of Lakshmi Puja, at the heart of five or so days of lamps, sweets and visits. Homes fill with diyas and boxes of mithai pass from family to family. A festival this generous has a smell, and it is not subtle: saffron, oud, rose and sugar.
India has bottled those smells for a long time. In Kannauj, on the Ganges, perfumers have made attar for more than 400 years, steaming flowers in copper stills and catching the scent in sandalwood oil, as National Geographic tells it. Some of those attars run warm, with cloves, cardamom and saffron. The famous perfume-house bottles that borrow the same palette are below, each beside the cheaper twin made to smell like it.

The lowest-priced twin among the festival picks is The Dupe Spot Hypnotic Poison #2, made after Dior Hypnotic Poison, at $13 per 100ml. For the biggest gaps on famous names all year, see the swaps.

A last tip for a long night of visits: go light. Two sprays before the first door, and a small atomiser in your pocket for the last one.
